39 Killed In Myanmar Jet Crash
A Myanmar Airways Fokker F-27
aircraft came down in northern Laos. The fate of the passengers and
crew was not immediatelyknown. Officials said the plane had carried 39
passengers.
The official said the aircraft came down on Payakha mountain, but gave no
other details.
The missing aircraft had been on a regular two-hour route from Yangon to
Myanmar's eastern border town of Tachilek, where it had been due to land at
0200 GMT on Monday. Yangon's Ministry of Information said on Monday the Fokker
had been unable to land at Tachilek due to poor weather so had flown on to
Heho in southeast Myanmar but then lost contact with ground control.
Tin Hlaing Hmee, the managing director of Myanmar Airways, said an airline
official who told Reuters on Tuesday that the plane had landed safely in Laos
had not been authorised to speak about the issue.
